Fuck off with your auto-playing video ads on every one of your sites. They crash my phone browser and chew through data plans. I get it. Kinja ain’t free. Ads are okay. No auto-plays though. That’s bullshit.

What OS and browser are you using?

I use Chrome on my iPhone and I don’t think I’ve ever seen an autoplay video.

Hey - send us a proper email at Help@gawker.com with a screenshot of the ad in question and we’ll write a proper complaint on your behalf - thanks in advance. (also let us know what browser and OS).

Meanwhile, go ahead and clear your cache, restart your browser (manually quit it don’t just close it) and see if that improves things.

See, this is why I love it here. Your support is genuine. And it seems like you actually care. This is a part of the reason why I come here. Thank you for that and for addressing concerns so quickly.

Agreed. Also on some sites, forums specifically, there are so many ads that the browser (Chrome, Firefox, IE) simply can’t handle all the auto-playing or over abundance of resource hogging ads. In fact, ad campaigns like auto play videos and gobs of “click me” ads have the opposite effect on web traffic; they deter it. At least this is true for me. When ever I find my self on a site that has a browser take over style video or the browser just locks up, I simply kill the browser and never return to that site.

For some companies, like Facebook, a complete video view constitutes three seconds of run time on the video, even if the video is muted. That’s why Facebook’s code prompts a video to play as you scroll through because if you scroll slow enough or stop scrolling for a moment as the video begins playing and even if you don’t actually watch the video, that counts as a full view, the analytics reflect, and somewhere down the pipeline somebody gets a monetary commendation because the stats show that the video/ad campaign is working.

I really hate ads. I get it, webspace isn’t free but can we please stop slamming ads in the face of the viewer that ultimately don’t allow the advertiser’s message to sink in? I honestly can’t think of one ad that I saw on the internet that resonated within me and made me think “wow, let me completely stop reading the content on this page so I can mindlessly click on this ostentatiously placed advertisement.” Do browser take over ads really generate revenue or do the stats of view counts create the income?

It’s not just the ads. It’s using auto-play on your videos and animated gifs.

Mobile IE on Windows Phone. None such thing. On my PC, you bet, and I have no issues using a full browser. Mobile Kinja sucks.

Mobile IE on Windows Phone 8.1 plus Dev preview. It works. And by works, I mean occasionally.

It’s not even the FP. I couldn’t get to a reply on a post I made on Giz because they had a damn auto-playing video ad (In Spanish no less) in the article, so my browser crashed trying to load the page.

+1. On my PCs, I just use AdBlocker. Ads on the sidebar are OK - invasive ads are not.

I only seem to notice that scrolling ad that appears when you try to scroll through the article - it’s only on my Android phone with the Chrome browser. Something for the Witcher or something like that. I simply stopped browsing any Gawker sites on mobile.

There is no ‘perfect’ mobile OS. Android is riddled with security flaws. IOS is too locked down. Windows Phone needs apps. How about you use what you like and quit with the judgmental superiority about MY choice in phones?

How was I supposed to know what your comment was aimed at?

What apps specifically are you looking for? Windows Phone has more apps than people realize. Google won’t work with MS to get their apps on WP, but that's on Google.

Well maybe just ask instead of starting out so aggressive? I follow the first rule of OPPO sir.

I do a bunch of home networking stuff and run/operate Kodi on Raspberry Pi’s and an Amazon Fire Tv through my phone (which appears to be recently available) When it’s time to look around for a new phone (august) I will once again go with the best option. I compare all the phones, the best part is Apple always falls short, which is awesome because I hate apple.

Also only android and iphone are supported through my pandora bluetooth streaming in my car (which is the coolest feature)

My response was completely civil, if rather defensive. Again, I had no way of knowing what your comment was aimed at.

Good luck with your search for a new phone. I am wishful that MS can get something worthwhile out by then, but I am not holding my breath.

I can stream Pandora over a BT connection with my phone. If by that you mean it integrates your stations with the car audio system, then I cannot do that. But any newer WP is going support the correct BT protocol to allow audio streaming from the phone to a car.

Yeah I’ve got all kinds of control, I can thumbs up/down through the head unit, change pandora stations through the unit, i can flip to pandora as the source and it’ll even load the app on my phone to start streaming without touching the phone.

It’s pretty sweet.

I’d be all for more companies (like head unit companies) embracing WP
